Where does the money go when a personal loan is approved?
Funds are deposited directly into your bank account - the one you provided during the application. For debt consolidation loans, some lenders send payment directly to your creditors instead. Funds typically arrive 1-3 business days after signing.
Context
Standard disbursement: After you sign the loan agreement electronically, the lender initiates an ACH transfer to the bank account you linked during the application. The funds appear as a deposit in your checking or savings account, typically within 1-3 business days.
Same-day and next-day options: Some lenders offer expedited funding. Upgrade and LightStream can fund the same business day for well-qualified applicants who sign early in the day. Many lenders fund the next business day after signing. Weekend disbursements are less common but possible with some lenders.
Debt consolidation direct payment: Some lenders (Happy Money, Payoff) specialize in debt consolidation and send loan proceeds directly to your credit card companies rather than to you. This eliminates the temptation to spend the funds elsewhere. You receive a statement showing which accounts were paid and for how much.
Origination fee deduction: If your loan has an origination fee, it is typically deducted from the loan proceeds before disbursement. A $10,000 loan with a 3% origination fee ($300) results in $9,700 deposited to your account. You still owe repayment on the full $10,000 principal.
What you cannot change: After approval and signing, you cannot change the bank account for the initial disbursement. For future monthly payments, most lenders let you update your payment account through the borrower portal.
Verification: Expect the lender to verify your bank account via micro-deposits or instant verification (Plaid) before funding. This is a one-time step during the application that you authorize.
