Should I get a personal loan instead of a tax refund advance?
Tax refund advances (refund anticipation loans) charge effective APRs that can exceed 100% when the fee is annualized. A personal loan at 12%-20% APR is almost always cheaper if you can qualify. Use a refund advance only if you need funds before your refund arrives and cannot qualify for a personal loan.
Context
What a tax refund advance is: Tax preparers (H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, TurboTax) offer 0-day to 21-day loans against your expected refund. Amounts typically range from $200 to $6,000. Some advertise '0% interest' - but they may charge fees for the associated debit card or preparation services that effectively make the loan expensive.
True cost of refund advances: A $500 refund advance with a $30 fee that is repaid when your refund arrives in 10 days has an effective APR of approximately 219%. A $25 'Refund Transfer' fee on a $2,000 advance repaid in 21 days equals roughly 22% APR. Compare to a personal loan at 15% APR, which is substantially cheaper for any duration longer than a few weeks.
When refund advances make sense: If you genuinely cannot qualify for a personal loan and need $200-$1,000 immediately to cover essential expenses (rent, utilities, groceries), a short-term refund advance that is truly no-fee or very low-fee can be reasonable. The key is verifying the all-in cost including preparation fees.
When to use a personal loan instead: If you need more than $1,000, or need funds for longer than your refund timeline, a personal loan is far cheaper. If you qualify for a personal loan at 15%-20% APR, you will pay dramatically less in interest than a refund advance fee annualized over the same period.
Filing for free: The IRS Free File program allows taxpayers earning under $79,000 (2025) to file for free through partner software. Free filing plus direct deposit gets most federal refunds in 10-21 days, eliminating the need for a refund advance entirely.
