Does a joint personal loan affect both applicants' credit scores?

Short answer

Yes. A joint personal loan appears on both applicants' credit reports and affects both credit scores identically. Both applicants experience the hard inquiry at application, the new account on their report, and all subsequent payment history - positive or negative.

Context

How joint reporting works: When two people apply jointly for a personal loan, the lender runs a hard inquiry on both credit reports. When the loan opens, both applicants have the loan account added to their individual credit files. Every payment (on-time or late) is reported to the credit bureaus for both borrowers simultaneously.

Positive effects for both: A consistent on-time payment history benefits both credit scores equally. If the primary borrower has a 640 score and the co-borrower has a 740 score, both benefit from on-time payments - the 640-score borrower may see faster improvement because they start lower.

Negative consequences for both: A single late payment (30+ days) is reported on both credit files and damages both scores. If the primary borrower stops paying entirely, the co-borrower's credit is damaged exactly as if they had stopped paying themselves. This is the fundamental risk of joint borrowing: you are 100% responsible for the debt regardless of what the other person does.

DTI impact on both: The joint loan monthly payment is counted in both applicants' DTI when they apply for other credit. If co-borrower A wants to apply for a mortgage later, the joint personal loan payment reduces how much new mortgage payment A can support. This debt is 'on' both people's books.

Removing the joint status: Once opened, a joint loan cannot be converted to a solo loan without refinancing. If the relationship between co-borrowers deteriorates (divorce, estrangement), both parties remain equally obligated and both credit profiles remain linked until the loan is paid off or refinanced.
