Does a personal loan account close automatically after I pay it off?

Short answer

Yes. A personal loan account is automatically closed when you make the final payment and it is processed. Unlike credit cards, you do not need to request closure - the account closes when the balance reaches zero. The account will appear as 'Paid/Closed' on your credit report, and the positive payment history remains for 10 years.

Context

How closure works: Personal loans are closed-end credit: they have a fixed term and a defined payoff date. When the last payment is received and processed, the lender closes the account. There is no action required on your part. The account does not reopen or reactivate. You will receive a final statement or a confirmation email.

Credit report impact of closure: Closed accounts remain on your credit report for 10 years (if paid as agreed). This is a positive - your history of on-time payments continues to help your credit score during this period. Your score may dip slightly when the account closes because you now have one fewer 'open' installment account, but this effect is typically small (2-5 points) and temporary. Your utilization calculation is not affected by installment loan closure (utilization only counts revolving credit like credit cards).

Length of credit history: Average age of accounts is a factor in your credit score (15% of FICO). When a personal loan account closes, it stays in your history but no longer contributes to active account aging. Over time, if this was your oldest account, its age still counts for the 10-year period it remains visible.

After final payment checklist: Confirm the payment processed (allow 3-5 business days for ACH to clear). Download or request a payoff letter or satisfaction letter. Monitor your credit report (free via AnnualCreditReport.com or credit monitoring service) to confirm the account shows as paid/closed within 30-60 days. Contact the lender if the account still shows a balance after 60 days.
