Can I pause or defer payments on a personal loan if I face hardship?

Short answer

Many lenders offer a hardship or forbearance program that lets you skip 1-3 payments or reduce the payment temporarily. You must call the lender proactively before missing a payment to access these options.

Context

What is hardship deferment: A temporary agreement with your lender to skip or reduce payments for 1-3 months. Interest typically continues to accrue during the deferral period, which extends the loan term or increases the final payment. No credit bureau reporting as missed payment if the deferment is approved in writing before the due date.

Which lenders offer hardship programs: Most major online lenders and credit unions have some form of program, though they do not always advertise it. Known programs: SoFi (payment pause), LendingClub (hardship plan), Upgrade (payment deferral), Avant (forbearance), Marcus by Goldman Sachs (payment deferral). Credit unions often have the most flexible programs.

How to request: Call the lender's customer service line, do not use the app. Explain the specific hardship (job loss, medical emergency, natural disaster). Have income documentation ready if they ask. Get the agreement in writing (email confirmation) before the due date.

What hardship deferment does NOT do: It does not waive interest. It does not guarantee no reporting to credit bureaus (ask explicitly about this). It is not permanent - you must resume payments after the agreed period.

If hardship continues beyond deferment: Ask about a loan modification (reduced interest rate), extended term (lower payments over more months), or settlement if the loan is already delinquent. A nonprofit credit counselor (NFCC member agencies) can negotiate on your behalf at no or low cost.

Missing a payment without calling first: A missed payment with no prior contact typically reports as 30 days late, costing 60-110 credit score points. Always call before the due date.
