Can I use a personal loan to set up a home office?

What a home office loan can cover: Standing desk and ergonomic chair ($500-$2,000). Computer and peripherals ($1,000-$3,000). Monitors, webcam, headset ($300-$1,000). Soundproofing or room partition ($500-$2,000). Video lighting for content creators or remote work ($200-$1,000). Office renovation or insulation for a garage or basement conversion ($5,000-$15,000).

Why personal loan over credit card: For amounts over $2,000 where you need 12+ months to repay, a personal loan's fixed rate (typically 10%-18%) beats a credit card's variable rate (typically 20%-29%) and gives you a predictable payoff schedule.

Tax deduction for self-employed: If you are self-employed and use the home office exclusively for business, home office equipment and furniture may be deductible under the home office deduction or Section 179 (immediate expensing of equipment). Remote work note: W-2 employees working from home cannot currently deduct home office expenses under federal law (the deduction for employees was eliminated under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act).
