Do I need a bank account to get a personal loan?
Almost all online personal lenders require a bank account for fund disbursement. A few lenders (OneMain Financial, check-cashing services) offer alternative disbursement, and prepaid debit cards can substitute at some lenders.
Context
Why lenders require bank accounts: Online personal lenders disburse funds via ACH electronic transfer, which requires a bank account number and routing number. Loan repayment also uses ACH direct debit in most cases. Without a bank account, neither disbursement nor automatic payment collection is possible through standard channels.
Lenders that may not require traditional bank accounts: OneMain Financial has physical branch locations and has historically offered disbursement by check, allowing customers without bank accounts in some cases. Call and verify current policy. Some credit unions serve the unbanked community with specialized products.
Prepaid debit card as a substitute: Some lenders accept prepaid debit cards (with routing/account numbers) for deposit. Cards like Netspend, Chime, and Green Dot assign a routing number and account number that function like a bank account for direct deposit purposes. Verify with the specific lender that they accept prepaid card deposits before applying.
Opening a bank account as the solution: If you do not have a bank account and need a loan, opening one first is the straightforward solution. Online banks (Chime, Current, Dave) accept customers with no credit history and often have no minimum balance and no monthly fees. Many can be opened within 24 hours and support same-day direct deposit. Getting a Chime account, then applying for a personal loan the next day, is a practical path for the unbanked.
Credit unions: Federal credit unions serve the unbanked and underbanked as part of their community mission. A credit union checking account may be easier to open than a traditional bank account for someone with prior banking problems (ChexSystems history).
