Do personal loans give an autopay discount?

Short answer

Most do. Mainstream lenders typically offer a 0.25-0.50% APR discount for enrolling in automatic payments from a checking account. On a $20,000 loan over 60 months, a 0.50% discount saves about $300 in total interest.

Context

The autopay discount is one of the easiest APR reductions to claim because it's automatic on application. SoFi, Marcus, LightStream, Discover, and most credit unions offer some form of autopay discount.

The catch: autopay requires consistent checking-account cash flow. If your balance fluctuates and an autopay charge can trigger overdraft, the overdraft fee (typically $35) wipes out months of discount value. Set up a low-balance alert or maintain a buffer specifically for the autopay date.
