Do personal loans have annual fees?

Short answer

Reputable personal loans do not have annual fees. The standard cost structure for a personal loan is a one-time origination fee (0%-8%) and an interest rate. Avoid any lender that charges recurring annual fees on a personal loan - this is not an industry norm.

Context

Standard personal loan cost structure: Origination fee (one-time): 0%-8% of loan amount, deducted from disbursement. Interest (ongoing): Charged daily on remaining balance, collected monthly. Late fee: Charged if payment is more than a grace period late (typically 10-15 days). Prepayment penalty: Charged by some (not all) lenders if you pay off early. ACH or check processing fee: Very rare.

Annual fees are for revolving credit, not installment loans: Annual fees exist on credit cards and sometimes on lines of credit - revolving products where the issuer maintains an open account indefinitely. A personal loan is an installment loan with a fixed end date. There is no reason to charge an ongoing annual fee on a product that self-terminates.

Red flags: Any personal loan lender charging an annual fee should be viewed with skepticism. This is not standard practice and may indicate a predatory lender. The same goes for monthly maintenance fees - these are not standard on personal loans from reputable lenders.

Some confusing products: Credit-builder loans (offered by Self Lender and some credit unions) sometimes charge a monthly fee ($1-$25/month). These are a distinct product from a standard personal loan - the fee covers administrative costs of a unique structure where your payments build savings you receive at the end. This is not the same as an annual fee on a personal loan.

Verify before signing: Before accepting any loan offer, read the fee schedule in the loan agreement. Every fee must be disclosed under TILA. Annual fees, monthly fees, or maintenance fees on a standard personal loan are unusual and should prompt you to check competing lenders.
