Can I have multiple personal loans at the same time?

Short answer

Yes, there is no federal law limiting the number of personal loans you can hold. Whether a specific lender will approve a second or third loan depends on your debt-to-income ratio, credit score, and the lender's internal policy. Existing loan payments count against your DTI for any new application.

Context

Nothing in federal law prevents a borrower from holding multiple personal loans simultaneously. Lenders evaluate each application on its own merits, but they do see your existing personal-loan obligations on your credit report and will count those payments in your debt-to-income ratio calculation.

Practical limits emerge through the DTI ceiling. If your existing personal loan consumes most of your available DTI headroom, a second lender will see that and may decline or limit the new loan amount accordingly. The combined monthly payments plus the new proposed payment must fit within the lender's DTI cap (usually 40-45%).

Some lenders have explicit internal policies, such as 'no more than two personal loans with us simultaneously' or 'maximum total personal-loan exposure of $X across all lenders.' These are lender-level policies, not regulatory requirements.

Credit-score effects: each application results in a hard inquiry and the new account ages your average account age. If you open multiple personal loans in a short window, FICO treats inquiries of the same type within a 45-day rate-shopping window as a single inquiry. But the new accounts themselves (not the inquiries) lower average account age and increase total debt.

Best practice: max out a single loan to the amount you need rather than taking multiple smaller loans. Multiple personal loans signal financial stress to future lenders and can trigger manual underwriting reviews.
