Grace Period (Loans)

Also known as: payment grace period, late payment window

In one sentence

The number of days after a due date during which a late payment will not be reported to credit bureaus or trigger a late fee. Typical personal loan grace periods are 10-15 days. After the grace period ends, late fees apply. After 30 days, the delinquency is reportable to credit bureaus.

Full definition

A grace period in loan context is the window of time after a scheduled payment due date during which the lender will not assess a late fee and will not report the payment as late to credit bureaus. Typical personal loan grace periods: Most personal loan servicers provide a grace period of 10-15 calendar days. Some extend to 30 days. Check your specific loan agreement for the exact grace period - it is typically disclosed in the 'Late Charges' or 'Payment' section. What happens at each threshold: Day 1 after due date: payment is technically late, but within the grace period - no fee, no credit bureau reporting. Day 10-15 (after grace period): late fee assessed. Common amounts: $25-$40 flat fee, or 5% of the payment amount, whichever is greater. Day 30: payment is 30 days past due. This is the reportable threshold under FCRA. A 30-day delinquency may be reported to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and will appear on your credit report. A single 30-day late payment can reduce a FICO score by 60-110 points depending on starting score. Grace period vs. deferment: A grace period is built into the loan agreement automatically. A deferment or forbearance is a temporary suspension of payments that must be applied for. Do not confuse the two. Practical use: If you are 12 days past due on a personal loan and within the grace period, you can make the payment before the grace period expires and avoid both a late fee and credit bureau reporting. If you cannot pay within the grace period, call the lender before the 30-day mark - many servicers will work out a short-term payment arrangement to avoid a credit bureau delinquency mark.
