APR includes the interest rate plus lender fees, making it the only number that lets you accurately compare personal loan offers. Two loans with the same interest rate can have very different APRs - and very different total costs.

APR vs Total Cost: Which Number Should You Use?
APR is the right number for comparing the cost of two loans of the same amount and term. But it does not tell you the total dollar amount you will pay.
Total interest cost = monthly payment x number of payments - principal borrowed
For the $10,000, 36-month loan at 12% interest: Monthly payment = $332.14; Total payments = $332.14 x 36 = $11,957; Interest paid = $1,957 (on top of the $300 origination fee = $2,257 total cost of borrowing).
When APR is not enough: If you are comparing a 24-month loan vs a 36-month loan, both at 12% APR, the shorter loan has higher monthly payments but lower total interest cost. APR alone does not tell you which is 'cheaper' in dollar terms - you need to compare the total interest paid over the full term.
The right comparison process: First, compare APRs to find the cheapest rate. Then, compare total interest cost to understand the dollar magnitude. Finally, compare monthly payments to confirm affordability. A lender with the lowest APR is not always the best choice if the term forces a payment you cannot manage.
Red Flags in APR Disclosure
Not all lenders are transparent about APR. These warning signs suggest a lender may not be disclosing costs accurately:
Advertising monthly rates instead of APR: '2.9% per month' sounds small but annualizes to approximately 34.8% APR. Lenders required to comply with TILA must show APR; advertising monthly rates is common among payday lenders and some subprime lenders who exploit rate confusion.
APR range with a very wide spread: If a lender advertises '7.99%-35.99% APR,' the bottom rate is essentially a marketing number used for advertising compliance. Most borrowers qualify toward the top. Ask the lender for your individualized rate estimate through soft-pull pre-qualification.
'As low as' advertising: 'Rates as low as 6.99% APR' applies only to their most creditworthy applicants. Treat this as a floor, not a typical rate.
Fees not captured in APR: Ask specifically whether there are any fees not reflected in the APR. Legitimate lenders will have a short answer (no, or here is what is not included). Evasive answers suggest hidden costs.
Mismatch between advertised rate and Loan Estimate: Under TILA, the APR on the Loan Estimate must be accurate within 0.125% for fixed-rate loans. If the final disclosure shows a significantly higher APR than advertised, you have the right to cancel the loan within 3 business days (right of rescission) for certain loan types.
